Romeo was a 79-53 winner in the boys meet that featured duels between senior sprinters Caleb Oyster of Eisenhower and John Jackman of Romeo.
Jackman won the 100 in 11.24 seconds. Oyster won the 200 in 22.15.
“Oh, my gosh, I love Jack,” Oyster said after winning the 200 against a field that included Jackman. “Me and him go way back.”
Jackman and Oyster have been competitors since ninth grade.
They look forward to the annual Ike-Romeo dual meet.
“It’s good to have a guy a little closer to me,” Jackman said. “Usually in dual meets like I don’t have much competition. Neither does he.
“We’re buddies out there. We’re enemies when the races start, but as soon as we cross the finish line we’re buddies again.”
Oyster is headed to Saginaw Valley State to play football. Jackman is going to Purdue for track.
“This season I’ve been focusing on endurance,” Jackman said. “I’ve been running 200s and 300s. In the indoor season, I ran more 200s than in previous years. When you train farther like that it helps you everywhere.”
Oyster’s indoor season was unlike others.
“This year, I think I took it a little more seriously,” he said. “I went the extra mile. I think it’s paying off.”The Eagles’ John Burke won the 800 with a performance that left him smiling.
“Oh, my god, that was great,” the senior said as he stalked the Eisenhower record of 1:58.4. “I’m very happy with it.”
Romeo finished 1-4 in girls and boys division dual meets.
