Eisenhower Girls’ Varsity Tennis finished their regular season at #8 according to the MHSAA rankings of Lower Peninsula Division 1 High Schools.

Eisenhower came into the regional match as the #1 seed having beat Port Huron Northern (PHN) during the regular season twice. Eisenhower beat out PHN in 2018 for the regional championship and was looking to do that very same thing in 2019.

Team scores were as follows with Eisenhower once again winning the trophy:

1 Eisenhower 31

2 PHN 24

3 Romeo 16

4 Dakota 11

5 Chippwa Valley 9

6 Utica 4

6 Utica Ford II 4

Eisenhower’s line up included:

1S Alexis Anthes (10) 1st

2S Tara Montreuil (9) 1st

3S Wiktoria Szemraj (11) 1st

4S Samantha Souder (12) 1st

3D Natalia Pfeffer (12)/Angelina Vrzovski (11) 2nd

4D Gabby DiCesare (11)/Kennedy Kullman (10) 1st

Eisenhower swept 1st place in every flight with the exception of 3 Doubles which went 3 sets with PHN to decide the match.

Newcomer to the MAC Red, Romeo, pushed hard on PHN and Eisenhower in the tournament and was able to defeat PHN at 3S for a spot in the championship against Eisenhower. Romeo lost to Eisenhower taking 2nd at 3S in the tournament, with PHN taking 2nd in all the other flights.

It’s not over for the Eagles as they spend the next 2 weeks preparing for the MHSAA LPD1 state championships in Midland. Eisenhower is looking to seed at several flights for the tournament that’s scheduled for Friday, May 31st @ The Greater Midland Tennis Center.

The football player whose last book read was a graphic novel. The basketball player who figures a Broadway play equals a pick and roll.

True student-athletes populate the entirety of the roster of the Eisenhower tennis team.

Coach Mike Pearson’s Eagles collectively sport an atmospheric 4.03 grade point average.

“The thing with tennis, it is such a mental sport. With the players being so dang smart, it really transitions well into the sport. You have to think about your shots all of the time and know what you are going to do based on the spin, the depth, the style of play,” said Pearson.

“They are all very coachable. They listen and when you tell them to do something, they will go out and try it and not give up after one shot. They will stick with the game plan. Watching them progress over the season and watching them develop has been great,” continued the Eisenhower coach.

One of the team’s three senior captains is Samantha Souder, who plays at fourth singles. The other captains are the first doubles team of Clare Henry and Isadora Dimovski.

Souder has a 4.20 grade point average and will be attending Kettering University in the fall where she will pursue a degree in computer science.

“Basically, at Kettering, it is like cooperative education. I will spend three months at school and three months at work and back and forth like that. I will be working at Stryker in Kalamazoo. I will be working on power tools for orthopedic surgery,” said Souder.

Stryker is a medical devices and equipment manufacturing company.

The student side of the student-athlete equation is obviously taken to heart by the Eagles.

So, too, is the athletic side of things.

Coach Pearson’s Eagles won seven of eight flights do dominate their Division 1 regional. It was their fourth regional championship in the coach’s five years leading the Eisenhower program.

His team finished the regular season with a 10-2 mark.

Among this season’s signature wins were against Troy, Ann Arbor Pioneer and Port Huron Northern.

In a scrimmage held earlier this week, Eisenhower defeated Cranbrook, 6-2. Cranbrook is ranked third in Division 3.

“Depth-wise, I think this is the best team in the five years I have been here, from top to bottom,” said Pearson. “They all get a long great. They like each other and they work hard every day at practice. They want to get better. They work hard in the off-season, too. They are very dedicated.”

That dedication for Souder began early.

“When I was a freshman, I took a few lessons in January before the season started to kind of prepare myself but no, I really had not played tennis before,” she said. “I have played a lot of sports, but this is definitely my favorite. The girls are really great. It is both a team sport and an individual sport at the same time.”

She will be playing fourth singles at the Division 1 state finals held at the Greater Midland Tennis Center Friday and Saturday.

Sophomore Alexis Anthes is Eisenhower’s number one singles player. Tara Montreuil, a ninth grader, will be at second singles. Junior Wiktoria Szemraj plays at number three singles.

Making up the doubles teams are Henry and Dimovski; junior Paige Nicholson and sophomore Elle Nicholson; senior Natalia Pfeffer and junior Angelina Vrzovski; junior Gabby DiCesare and Kennedy Kullman, a sophomore; as well as Aleksandra Makrievski, a senior, and junior CeCe DiCesare.

All state finals tennis tournaments will be held Friday and Saturday. The Division 2 finals will be at Holland/Hope College. The Division 3 athletes will gather in Novi; while the Division 4 competition will be hosted by Kalamazoo College.
