UTICA HIGH SCHOOL: 0

Eisenhower had a championship and a milestone to celebrate.

The Eagles defeated host Utica 1-0, claiming a share of the MAC Red Division championship with Chippewa Valley. That win Monday was the 200th  in  Josh VanHouten’s 14-year career as Eisenhower coach.

“It was a big reload for us this year after losing 13 seniors from last year,” VanHouten said. “These boys really stepped up collectively as a group. They put their mind to it and only conceded five goals in the MAC Red with eight shutouts.”

Eisenhower shared the division title with Chippewa Valley as both teams finished    8-2-0.

Ike and Chippewa Valley are headed to separate Division 1 district tournaments. The Eagles are in the tournament hosted by Stoney Creek, while the Big Reds are in the field at Dakota for a district that includes MAC White champ Anchor Bay.

Eisenhower plays at Stoney Creek on Wednesday. Chippewa Valley starts district play next week.

The Eagles got all they wanted from a feisty Utica team, which battled Eisenhower to a scoreless tie at halftime.

“We stymied Eisenhower a little bit,” Utica coach Carl Territo Jr. said. “We still had some unforced errors that cost us at times for possession, but the guys all stepped up and played well.”

Eisenhower finally got the goal it needed when Liam Smith pounced on a rebound in front of the net with 35:43 left in the second half.

“We’ve been working on that and had it set up a couple other times tonight,” VanHouten said. “Those are the goals that win games.”

Utica nearly tied the game with 10 minutes to play when a shot caromed off the right goal post.

“Utica had senior night and had a lot of adrenaline going,” VanHouten said. “We knew we had to match Utica’s intensity and were hoping one goal would be enough. It wasn’t a pretty game.”

For VanHouten, earning his 200th career win was something he said he was glad to get before the state tournament started. He also credited several people for guiding him throughout his career as a coach.

“I anticipate getting a lot more,” VanHouten said. “It means I’ve been here a lot of years. It’s a great accomplishment. I’ve had some great mentors from (former Eisenhower coach) Chris Corteg, (Eagle girls coach) Mehrdad Nekoogar and my dad (Tom VanHouten), who was a coach. It’s a great honor. I have a great group of guys and they wanted to get this one for me.”

Eisenhower goalkeeper Evan DeJong made two saves in the shutout, which improved Eisenhower’s overall record to 12-2-2 overall.
