Eisenhower downs Ford 40-35 with fourth-quarter burst

Ford's Karlin Stepp attempts a shot over Eisenhower's Olivia Stack during their MAC crossover contest at Eisenhower Friday night.

Eisenhower’s Olivia Stack played like the captain she is in the fourth quarter Friday night.

Stack scored five of her nine points in the final quarter, including a putback with 6:08 to play that put Eisenhower ahead of visiting Ford. That sparked a 15-7 fourth-quarter Eagle run, pacing a 40-35 MAC crossover victory over the Falcons.

“Olivia is a senior and our main player with varsity experience from last year,” Eisenhower coach Cliff Piper said. “She’s our leader and captain. She does everything for us. She rebounds, can dribble the ball and communicates out there.”

Lauren Lutz followed with a putback that extended the Eagle lead to 32-28, before Ford eventually cut the deficit to 37-35 on a triple by Kelly Bartlett with 1:25 to play.

Eisenhower closed out the win with two free throws by Stack with nine seconds to play, before Emma Griffiths added one free throw with two seconds left.

“Shaniya Coffee had a big three-point play to give us a boost off the bench at the start of the fourth quarter and we needed that,” Piper said. “We try to play full court and I don’t know if it tires other teams out or not, but we won the fourth quarter and it worked.”

Ford coach Matt Joseph said his team didn’t meet Eisenhower’s full-court pressure in the final quarter.

“I just think we didn’t finish again, and it’s something we have to do a better job at,” Joseph said. “We started playing passive in the fourth quarter and it allowed Ike’s press to become effective. That’s a big thing. When a team presses you and you attack it, you can do some great things.”

Ford held the lead for most of the first three quarters, leading 8-6 after one period, 17-15 at halftime, and 28-25 heading into the fourth quarter.

“You want to finish,” Joseph said. “There were a lot of good things we did today, and I told them that. You have to focus on that and know you can fix the things that didn’t look good.”

Eisenhower was led offensively by Ava Stack with 10 points, while Emilia Jakuc and Tori Verellen each added four points. The win improved the Eagles’ record to 1-1 overall.

“The first half reminded me of our first game on Tuesday night,” Piper said. “We shot 20 percent, and I haven’t seen the stats, but we were probably around there again. You’re not going to win too many games with 20 percent shooting. It got better.”

Ford, which fell to 0-2 overall, was led by Olivia Kubik with 14 points, while Zahra Williams added eight points, and Karlin Stepp finished with five points
