Romeo runs for third straight county cross country 'double'.

The starting gun is about to fire on an important part of Romeo’s cross country campaign.

The Bulldogs try to defend their girls and boys Macomb County championships Saturday, in the event that ushers in the more important meets on the calendar.

“This is the start of our championship season, and we really look forward to the county meet as it kick-starts everything for us,” coach Mike Buslepp said.

“The kids have been working hard, they have been embracing the training, and this is another opportunity to continue to show the improvement we are looking for as we progress through October towards the rest of the championship season.”

Both Bulldogs teams have in-season credentials and a history of success.

The boys are No. 1 in the state Division 1 ranking compiled by Cross Country Invitational Results, which bases its listings on invitational performances.

Brighton is No. 1 and Romeo No. 2 in the ranking done by MichiganCrossCountry.com.

The Romeo girls are No. 15 according to MichiganCrossCountry.com.

Both teams went 7-0 in the only MAC Red Division jamboree.

The county meet starts with the girls race at noon at Lake St. Clair Metropark. The boys race starts at 12:30 p.m. Following girls and boys JV races, an awards ceremony starts at 2:30 p.m.

The top 21 girls and boys finishers are named All-Macomb County. The first seven are named First Team.

Last year, Romeo became the first school to sweep the girls and boys races for a second time. The Bulldogs also won both championships in 2017.

The girls have won three consecutive titles. The boys finished second in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

“I know we have had a ton of success at the county meet over the past couple years, but this is a new year and new opportunity,” Buslepp said. “The county has some really good athletes, and we have respect for that.

“The only expectation we have is to continue to progress as a group this weekend, and use this opportunity to see how good we can be.”

In county rankings done by Glenn Craze, the top five boys teams are Romeo, Utica, Anchor Bay, De La Salle and Armada.

Craze’s top five girls teams are Romeo, Regina, Stevenson, Dakota and Lutheran North. Regina is ranked No. 10 in Division 2 by CCIR.

In individual rankings, Craze’s top seven boys are Jack Wilson, Romeo; Carson Nicoletti, Utica; Zander Cobb, Romeo; Noah Verlinde, Armada; Jack Kelke, Romeo; Charlie Wilson, Romeo, and Adam Thomas, Anchor Bay.
