De La Salle wins regional soccer championship with victory over Eisenhower

Noah Modena of Eisenhower heads the ball as De La Salle's Connor Jasman looks on during the first half of a Division 1 regional championship match at Stevenson.

De La Salle is bound for the state soccer semifinals.

Rocco Galati scored on a header in the third minute of the second overtime to lead the Pilots to a 2-1 victory over Eisenhower in a Division 1 regional championship match at cold and damp Stevenson on Saturday night.

"This is the biggest goal I've ever scored," Galati, a senior, said. "It was a great service in by Tad Gabryel. I got my head on it."

Dom Nikaj scored on a shot from about 25 yards out to tie the match 1-1 in the 34th minute of the second half, and De La Salle's Scott Larson scored on a header in the 38th minute of the first half.

Galati's goal helped five-time state champion De La Salle (19-3-4) advance to meet Ann Arbor Skyline in a state semifinal match at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Troy.

"I thought Eisenhower was the better team today," DLS coach Thaier Mukhtar said. "We capitalized on a couple of set pieces. Credit to Roc. He took a lot of the responsibility for their goal.

"Give Eisenhower a lot of credit. They played their butts off."

Skyline (15-4-2) won the state championship in 2013.

In the other semifinal, Grand Blanc plays East Kentwood at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Holt.

The championship game is Nov. 3.

Eisenhower finished 17-4-3.

MAC Red Division champion Eisenhower reached the regional by winning the L’Anse Creuse North district.

De La Salle won the Lake Shore district.

De La Salle is the second county team in the semifinals. Lutheran North plays either Brooklyn Columbia Central or Grosse Ile at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Howell.

The last county team to win a boys state championship was Richmond in Division 3 in 2006. Stevenson, the Division 1 runner-up in 2010, was the last county team to appear in a final.
