Bianca Licari has quite an impressive resume in high school swimming.

Ditto for Abby Warner, a teammate on the Eisenhower team.

Let’s not stop there. There are plenty of adjectives to be sprinkled about on the 10 seniors on the team.

Most, if not all, have been on coach Lisa Doherty’s squad for four years.

That means they have been county champions all of those years.

Eisenhower finished with 489 points to claim its fifth straight Macomb County Swimming & Diving Championship on Saturday, Oct. 6.

Second-place Dakota had 321 points. L’Anse Creuse North finished third with 275 points. Anchor Bay was fourth with 229 and Chippewa Valley fifth at 194. Rounding out the top 10 were Lakeview 164, Fraser 143, Utica 85, Regina 70 and Ford 63.

Licari, who set the county record in the 100 butterfly with a 57.48 showing, was named Senior of the Meet. Licari also anchored the 400 freestyle relay team, which also set a county record (3:39.94).

Others on the team were Amelia Plonis, Warner and Addisyn Tokarz.

“To win this year was the cherry on top,” said Licari. “It’s our last year. It has been cool to be a part of a different team every year and still go out and win the county meet.”

Licari and Warner are also members of the Utica Shelby Swim Club.

“I’ve been with Utica Shelby for 10 years,” she said. “Swimming is like freedom to me. It gets my mind off other things.”

Like all high school seniors, there is plenty on her mind. She has a 4.03 grade point average and is looking at a couple of colleges with an eye on swimming.

“I think I’ll be a pre-med major,” said Licari. “I like science and math, and I like helping people. Nursing is a possibility, but I think I might want to go further in medicine.”

Licari and Warner were spending the weekend at Colorado Mesa University. Their former teammate, Abbey Desmet, attends the school located in Grand Junction. She is also on the Mavericks’ swim team.

“I am looking forward to seeing Abbey and the campus,” said Licari. “I don’t think I’ll be going to school there, though. I want something within driving distance.”

The drive to succeed is obviously a big part of the program at Eisenhower.

“I like the competition,” said Licari. “I like going against different people all the time. I like the team aspect, too. In high school, you are closer to your teammates. We have team pasta parties all of the time. We have team sleepover. We go out and do team events. It’s a lot of fun.”

Winning the county meet is part of that fun.

“I think it is pretty cool. No matter how many different people come on the team, everyone gives the meet their all. They all try their best,” said Warner.

“As a ninth-grader, I didn’t know what the county meet was going to be like. I just thought it would be a cool experience. I didn’t expect we would win. But we did and everyone was super happy,” she continued.

That happiness has been a shared experience. The other seniors on the team are Amelia Bruni, Megan Denehy, Isabella DiNatale, Maria Domerese, Vivian Nguyen, Natalia Pfeffer, Kendra Pollick and Rebecca Ribbing.

Warner has been with the Utica Shelby team about seven years.

“I really tried just about every other sport there was and I didn’t like any of them,” she said, laughing. “I even did dance and ballet.

“I like swimming as part of a team. Everyone loves the sport, and we all work for a common goal,” continued Warner.
